Your First Week at Vickery Athletics

Every new member asks the same questions before their first class at Vickery Athletics in Dallas. What do I wear? How hard is it? What if I can't keep up? Here's the honest walkthrough of what actually happens during your first week — class format, scaling, soreness, and what to bring.

Day 1: The trial class

You arrive 10 minutes early. A coach introduces you to the space — bathrooms, water, where your phone goes. The class starts with a warm-up (5–8 minutes), moves into skill or strength work (15–20 minutes), hits a conditioning piece (10–15 minutes), and finishes with a cool-down. Every movement has a scaled version. A coach walks you through each one before you do it. You'll finish tired but not wrecked. Expect to leave feeling like you learned something — not like you survived something.

Day 2: Are you sore?

Probably yes, especially if it's been a while. Soreness is normal, not a sign of damage. Walk it off, sleep well, eat protein, and show up for day 3. Soreness that feels like a sharp pain in a joint is different — talk to your coach. Most new-member soreness settles by day 4.

Day 3: Second class

Same format as day 1. The movements will feel a little more familiar. You'll scale slightly less aggressively. Coaches will start using shorter cues because you've heard them before. This is where most members feel the first flash of 'I can do this.'

Day 4–5: Rest + recovery

New members often try to train 4–5 days their first week. Don't. Train 3 days your first week. Take rest days. Recovery is when your body adapts — not during the workout. This is especially true for members restarting after years off.

Day 6–7: Class 3 + signup decision

Your second trial class lands here. You know the format now. The workouts are hard but not confusing. Members around you are friendly — Vickery isn't a place where no one talks to each other. By the end of class 2, most people know: this is their gym or it's not. If it is, sign up for a membership that fits your life — 12x/month is a great starting point if you're training 3 days a week.

Related FAQ

What should I wear to my first class?
Athletic clothes you can lift in. Training shoes (flat-soled like Converse, Vans, or dedicated lifting shoes work best, but any athletic shoe works). A water bottle. That's it.
What if I can't finish the workout?
You won't finish everything as written, and that's normal. Every workout at Vickery scales — shorter time, lighter weight, fewer reps, simpler movement. The coach decides the scaling with you on day 1 so it's always achievable.
How sore will I be?
Moderately sore is normal for day 2 and 3 of your first week. Severe soreness that lingers beyond a week or sharp joint pain is a flag — tell your coach. For most members, soreness fades by week 2 as the body adapts.
How soon will I see progress?
Measurable progress usually shows by week 4–6 — a heavier squat, a faster conditioning time, a body-comp change. You'll feel stronger and more energetic earlier than that, around week 2.
